Brief 25-Years History
Shanghai Sanda University was founded in June 1992, by professors from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Peking University and Tsinghua University, as the first full-time private university in Shanghai. In August 1992 it was  officially approved by Shanghai Higher Education Bureau, and started its first recruitment and enrollment of students in the autumn of that year. In February 1994 it was  officially approved by China State Education Commission, former Ministry of Education. After 10 years education practices, it was finally officially approved by the Ministry of Education, and began to provide full-time four-year undergraduate programs in March 2002. Three years later, in August 2005 it was successfully accredited as a bachelor’s degree accreditation institute by the Academic Degrees Accreditation Committee of Shanghai Municipal Government. Due to institutional great efforts, in April 2012 it was listed as Shanghai Model Private University Candidate by Shanghai Education Commission and lately in June 2013 it  became one of the first members of China Association of Universities (Colleges) of Applied Sciences. In December 2013 it became one of the first members of National Association of Non-profit Private Universities and Colleges.

Governance Structures

The university is operated by the Board of Trustees as the decision making body. The University administration is let by the President as the execution team for decision implementation, In addition is has an Academic Committee which consists of several professors selected from various areas and represent all relative disciplines to decide on academic program development, quality assurance, and other academic related issues. There exits annual Delegation Conferences for Faculty and Staff and other employees. The conference decides the ultimate goal of the university and benefits of all stakeholders.


Since its foundation, Sanda has firmly stood by its principles that education should be for public welfare and non-profit. In order to meet the needs of Shanghai’s regional economic development and the target of modernizing university education, Sanda has been striving to build herself into an application-oriented and internationalized first-class private university to train refined and qualified talents with Chinese virtues, international vision and highly innovative capacity.

Resources and Programs

The University has two campuses, one in the Pudong District of Shanghai and the other in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province, with a total area of 133 acres and a building area of 300,000 square meters. Currently there are 746 faculty members, including 547 full-time teachers. With a total enrollment of 12,800 students in 2015, 11,900 of whom being undergraduates, Sanda has had a total number of over 34,000 graduates since its foundation. Sanda has 16 schools that offer 27 undergraduate programs in the fields of Economics, Law, Literature, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Arts, and Education. The schools are:

Industry Partnership

Sanda has over 160 off-campus practice bases. In 2014 alone, 28 university-level industry-university cooperative education bases were set up. There are 45 part-time professors and 142 teaching labs, creating essential opportunities for training application-oriented talents.

International Partners

Sanda has established students exchange and teacher training programs in cooperation with more than 40 universities from 14 countries and regions including Rider University and Lander University of the USA, University of Hull and University of East London of the UK, Waseda University of Japan, Al Carla University of Spain, Lausanne University of Switzerland, Central University of Applied Sciences of Finland, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences of Holland, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages of Taiwan, Macau University of Science and Technology, Varna Free University of Bulgaria, University of Nantes of France, the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems of Austria, and University of Social Sciences and Humanities of Poland. Sanda is also one of the first private universities to be qualified for enrolling students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.


The University has been awarded many honors such as National Advanced Non-Governmental Organization, AAAAA Unit, National Excellent Private University, May 1st Labor Medal, and Shanghai Model Unit (6 times in a row), Shanghai Safety Model Unit, etc. For the past 3 years, the average employment rate for the graduate is 98%.
